Required Data Collection for Fine Arts Report – Section 1003.4995, Florida Statutes

Section 1003.4995, Florida Statutes (F.S.), requires the commissioner to develop a fine arts report to be posted on the Florida Department of Education website. The department will use data already reported by districts to provide most of the information presented in the report. However, to fulfill the requirements of section 1003.4995, F.S., the following additional information is needed:

  • The manner in which schools are providing the core curricular content for fine arts established in the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.

In order to address this component of the statutory requirement, the department has created a survey to be completed by each school in your district. Please forward to each principal or principal-designated staff member to complete this brief survey by April 30, 2022. The survey can be found at https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/6691777/2021-2022-Fine-Arts-Report.

SIPPS Study Results and Professional Learning Opportunity

This year we had the opportunity to participate in a quasi-experimental study with Collaborative Classroom to determine the impact SIPPS has on students’ reading achievement.  Several of our elementary schools participated as either the treatment or control group in the SIPPS Study with 1st and 2nd grade students in need of Tier 3 interventions.  I am pleased to announce that the results were very positive, and evidence shows SIPPS meets ESSA Level 2 Requirements: Program Accelerates Acquisition of Foundational Skills for Striving Readers.

Here are a few highlights from the study:

  • Conducted in Pasco County School District, FL, one of the 50 largest districts nationwide
  • Followed the impact of 3 months of intervention on 600 first-and-second-grade students identified to receive reading intervention, as measured by DIBELS
  • Students who received SIPPS achieved significantly greater reading growth than their peers who received a different intervention: observed effect size was .25 (Cohen’s d)

Here is a link to the full study, if you would like to read it in its entirety.

I would like to give a shout out to the teachers, coaches, and administrators at the following schools for their participation in the study:

CHES, CWTES, CRES, DOES, MGES, FHES, HPA, LES, NRES, PES, PVES, QHES, TOES, WGES, WZES, WES

I would also like to thank Mike Campoamor for working with me to pull the data and Danielle Varcardipone for providing ongoing SIPPS professional learning opportunities over the past few years.

As part of our participation, we have been able to expand our professional learning opportunities with Collaborative Classroom coaches and have offered sessions for our secondary support facilitators and ongoing sessions this spring open to all elementary teachers to strengthen implementation.

Collaborative Classroom is offering a complimentary SIPPS professional learning series. Each session will be held from 4:30-5:15PM. Click on the links below for session descriptions and to register. Feel free to join all the sessions or select sessions.

RAISE School Leaders: Professional Learning Opportunity

The Florida Department of Education is pleased to announce a professional learning opportunity for all identified RAISE schools as part of the RAISE initiative. The upcoming literacy webinar, Leaders Lifting Early Literacy, will focus on the role of the school-based personnel who support literacy (or Literacy Leadership Team, as termed by the State). The objectives for this session are as follows:

  • Establish or refine the Literacy Leadership Team’s K-3 early literacy vision and goal;
  • Envision effective instructional environments which facilitate foundational literacy development; and
  • Elevate the role the Literacy Leadership Team plays in cultivating this work in classrooms.

It is recommended that each RAISE school sends two school-based literacy leaders (administrators, literacy coaches, interventionists) to register and participate in the webinar. Two sessions will be offered- one in the morning of March 30th and the other in the afternoon of April 5th. Only one session is needed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact @Roshonda Renee Royster or @Courtney Paige Lough.

No Instructional Coaching Contract Extension for 2022-23

We wanted to thank you for your stakeholder input around the coaching contract extension.  At this time, the Superintendent Staff has determined that there will not be a coaching contract change for the 2022-23 school year.  Considerations included the inability to identify recurring funds for the extension from the general fund.  It is possible that the plan will be considered in the future when those funds can be secured.  In the upcoming school year, instructional coaches will work a 196-day contract.

Coaching Smore and Summer Coaching Academy

We are sharing a link to our Coaching SMORE.  This is one of the key structures we use to communicate with our stakeholders.  In the SMORE, folks can find links to our  Instructional Coaching Dates 2021-2022.docx, meeting information and links for upcoming events, highlights on best practices around equity, data usage & display, and other key coaching skills.  We also offer nice-to-know information around professional development opportunities and state updates.

Our last monthly content coaching meetings are coming up at the end of this month.  We are offering live sessions at the district office in many cases in hopes of besting Zoom fatigue and to inspire connection and engagement.  Moving forward, we are working on plans to limit the number of times a coach is pulled from your building.  We will stack the ELA and Math content days onto the same day so that folks that wish to attend both will only be out of the building one time.

Summer Coaching Academy:

The Summer Coaching Academy is designed for both coaches and administrators to work together around coaching in your building.

June 21st or 22nd (PHCC Porter Campus) 8:30-3:30pm

Sharon Thomas from Jim Knight’s Instructional Coaching Group provides professional learning where admin teams and coaches work together. Each school will join the event for one full day of learning.

Here are sign-ups for teams to choose the date that will best fit their Summer Plans.  Thanks in advance for booking your day and letting us know how many folks from your team will join.  Stipends are provided for School-Based Coaches for this Summer event.

New Teacher Events- Important Information to Share with New Hires

It is that time of year that you will be actively hiring for next year. The new teacher team wants to ensure that all new hires are invited to some welcoming and learning opportunities this summer. Please share this flyer with them and help them register for the New Teacher kickoff on Monday, July 25th from 8:30-4:00pm. The kickoff will be at Land O’ Lakes High School. Yes, in person! This event is required for all new hires to attend.

All new hires whether they are coming to us with experience or not are invited to each of these events. Our goal is to be able to connect with them at the district level as quickly as possible. Along with your help we can make this happen! Please see below for details and if you have any questions reach out to Charlotte Kralik.

New hires packages will be sent to each school. In this package are postcards with information about the new teacher year-long induction and PDCP. Colored copies of the summer events flyer as well as a poster to be hung in your front office. Please be on the lookout for this package and hand out to these to all new hires!

Alternative Certification Program for New Hires
