Pasco County’s Fall Coaching Conference August 31st (8:30-4:30pm)

Hello administrators and coaching stakeholders.  We have our Fall Coaching Conference scheduled for August 31st.  Here is a link to all of the session descriptions and professional development opportunities.  We will combine presentations from national coaching experts, local external partners and vendors, and our great internal experts to offer a variety of choices designed to meet the needs of our instructional coaches.  There will be a few requires sessions for coaches that support the upcoming Early Release dates (train-the-trainer sessions), and opportunities to engage in sessions around coaching content through best practices.

Here is a link to the event on Sched:  https://coachingconference2021.sched.com/.  Thanks in advance for providing your coaches with the time to participate in this virtual event.  Please contact Jeremy Blair, Program Coordinator for Instructional Coaching, with any questions, input, or needed clarifications.

Math Early Release Day – Pick Your Path (please share with teachers)

We are excited to be engaging in Early Release Days with our Math teachers.  We will have 5 different paths that teachers can select to join: Middle School On Level, Middle School Accelerated, Algebra 1/LAM 1, Geometry, Electives (Algebra 2, MCR, Prob/Stats and Pre-Calc).  Please encourage your teachers to select their path using this link by August 31st.  We will then share out the list so you know which path each teacher has selected.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to Odalis Tavares.

September is American Founders’ Month

September (American Founders’ Month) is an important month for Social Studies instruction and one of the busiest for instructional statutes. Instructional statutes are required instruction in addition to standards aligned instruction. Please make sure that teachers are documenting within their lesson plans how they are embedding and meeting the instructional statutes. Below you will find a list of important dates linked to resources within our learning networks and within the MyLearning Canvas courses. As the FLDOE updates resources those will be included as well within our instructional mandates page. Also continuing this year within the LN Mandates Pages is a hyperlinked calendar with ideas and resources for the month.

As each of your campuses celebrate the month with great lessons and activities, please take pictures and share them out with us via email or Twitter with the #PascoHonorsFoundersMonth. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Tina Stavrou with any questions. We are eager to see the great lessons in all our classes!

IXL for High School Math Interventions

We are happy to inform you that your School currently has IXL licenses for Tier 3 intervention.  That would be for students  with a PMP in Algebra 1, or students in Algebra 1A or LAM 1.  Your school has up to 200 licenses available.  Your teachers using IXL will need to be loaded into the system so please send a list of teachers (with their emails) to Jan Anderton.

If you would like to purchase more for the rest of your math students, contact Chrissy Earnheardt at chrissye@ixl.com and  use your school’s instructional funds.  You would still qualify for the district rate, so let her know you’re from Pasco County Schools.

FYI:  Research has shown that in schools using IXL for two years, the math passing rate on the FSA was 15 percentile points higher in schools compared to non-IXL schools.

Good News:  IXL has a weekly diagnostic available for students that could be used as a data point  for PMP’s in myStudent SSS.

Here is the information on how to use IXL to share with your teachers.

PMP (Tier 3) Timeline of Events

Within the first 30 days of school, we should be reviewing a current list of students with PMPs in the area of ELA and Math and comparing it to the myEWS eligibility list.  Please remember, we used multiple data points to generate the tentative list of students in need of a PMP (Tier 3 intensive intervention and remediation). For Tier 3 resources, please access the Tier 3 Decision Guide and Resource Maps for ELA and Math on the Learning Networks under  Progress Monitoring Plan Actions. Ultimately, the teacher, in collaboration with the SIT team, will make the final PMP updates in myStudent.  This will need to be done on the PMP/Interventions tab in myStudent by September 21st. We will also be sending home a district letter notifying all families of our updates to the PMP process and criteria.

Once the PMP status is verified or updated, then teachers will need to develop an intervention plan in the SSS module under Academic Monitoring. This plan should reflect the Tier 3 interventions the student is receiving in ELA and/or Math. You will see that under Event, this is where the Notification Letter and Progress Monitoring Plan is generated. If a change has been made to PMP status, then the letter will be populated with updates, if no changes have been made from EOY, then the letter would be blank and you would not need to send it home.  Parent meetings should be scheduled to create Progress Monitoring Plans, prior to the end of Q1, October 15.

Here are links to a few resources to support this process:

o    Initial or New Subject Area Progress Monitoring Plan, Process of Events

o    Discontinue Progress Monitoring Plan, Process of Events

Please note that we will start reporting monthly progress to parents beginning with Q1 Report Cards.  Here is a chart that indicates when the progress letters will be generated in the letter queue in myStudent and when they should be sent home.

Senior Part-Time Status Requests-Reminder

A current senior can only make a request for part-time status during their last year of enrollment in high school and if they are ahead in credits.  Full-time PHSC students are not considered part-time. The student must also be experiencing a hardship (medical or financial) that makes the request necessary.  If a request is made the following process will be utilized:

  • The administrator and/or school counselor will complete the part-time status request form and send it to Tonia Shook and Lynn Young.
  • The email will include the reason the request is being made.
  • Tonia and Lynn will review the requests weekly and then will send the information and their recommendation to Superintendent’s Staff for final review.
  • Once this process is completed the school will be notified of the approval or denial of the request.

Please remind students of the implications for Valedictorian and Salutatorian status if they are approved for part time status. The requirements for Val/Sal eligibility can be found in the SPP. Please contact Tonia Shook  or Lynn Young  with questions.

Financial Literacy Requirement

This is a reminder about the financial literacy requirement that must be met by all high school students.  Section 1003.4282, F.S., Requirements for a standard high school diploma, requires a student to earn one-half credit in economics, and 1003.41, F.S., Next Generation Sunshine State Standards which must include financial literacy instruction.  Students meet this requirement through 2102335 Economics with Financial Literacy and/or 2102345 Economics with Financial Literacy Honors, as well as through the academic elective of Personal Financial Literacy 2102372 and Personal Financial Literacy Honors 2102374.

Students completing their economics requirement through AP or Dual Enrollment and are not enrolled in the Personal Financial Literacy elective are required to be instructed in all of the financial literacy content associated with the 9-12 Financial Literacy Strand and its related standards and benchmarks. In order to meet this requirement, Pasco County Schools has provided a seven-module online course through the EverFi, Financial Literacy platform. The 2021-22 cohort Everfi Course access code for DE students is:88ffe299.   The course will take approximately 6 hours for a student to complete to earn certification in the content.  AP Micro and Macro teachers will serve as the teacher for the EverFi modules and must monitor that the students who still need to meet their financial literacy requirement.  Tina Stavrou will be the EverFi teacher for Dual Enrollment students. Linked is a letter that, prior to graduation, any appropriate school personnel can use to notify any AP and/or DE students that they have not met the requirement due to not completing the modules.

Students in an IB or AICE diploma program are not required to be instructed in content outside the scope of the program’s courses provided that the student successfully completes the IB or AICE curriculum.

If you have questions on how your students can meet the Financial Literacy content requirement, please reach out to Tina Stavrou.

Admin Moves:  3 Quick Tips to a Great Start with Your Instructional Coaches

    1. Set up an initial meeting to discuss your goals, common vision of coaching, and to set a regular meeting schedule.
    2. Review Coaching Expectations.  The most impactful instructional coaching is focused on face-time with teachers and teacher teams.  Prioritize instructional coaching around content and student outcomes.  Align coaching efforts to your school goals.
  • Clearly define coaching at your school.  Consider a communication plan for stakeholders to communicate your coaching definition, the way your coaches spend time, and what teachers and teams can expect from coaches.

New Teacher On-Boarding/Compassionate Classroom Make-up: Saturday, September 18th
Please share with new teachers that did not attend the kickoff on Monday, July 26th. Use this spreadsheet to see who attended from your school.

This is a highly suggested course for all new hires to Pasco whether they are coming in with experience or not. For the On-boarding session, we will review information about the Pasco Way of Work as well as our systems, platforms, evaluation systems, and orient all new hires to Pasco County Schools. In the afternoon, we will begin our journey with building a compassionate classroom.  We will engage in an activity to understand the six pillars of a developmental relationship and the importance of building trusting relationships with their students. We will emphasize that setting clear expectations, rules, and procedures is essential to maximize learning. All new teachers will begin to build out their classroom success plan for the year including these elements and much more.

All teachers that attend will receive a stipend pay for joining us on Saturday from 8:30am-3:30pm. This session will be via zoom. Information and zoom link will be sent to participants prior to this training.

Year-Long Induction for New Teachers
Please see this flyer for dates and times for our year-long induction. We will be offering six additional sessions during the school year. The new teacher team has been visiting schools with high percentages of new teachers to bring new teacher professional development information and materials. We are working this week to send these materials to all other schools through the courier.

These sessions will include very important information about your first year as a teacher and some of the challenges that new teachers might experience. All new teachers will engage with a couple of resources that are provided to them. They are called, “The Beginning Teachers Field Guide” and “Teach Like a Champion 3.0.” We will be using these books to guide our learning. We will focus on mental set and the importance of maintaining your composure and reactions. Knowing when and how to intervene with challenging behaviors to the power of specific positive praise and celebrating student success. Throughout all our sessions we will have a focus on relationship building, modeling engagement strategies that they can use in the classroom the next day! Our sessions will end towards the end of quarter three. During quarter four, we will have a final session for new teachers to reflect on what went well and what can you do differently for the following year. A great activity that mentors can support with.

Please review your school’s list of new teachers that will be registered for this learning. We are targeting new teachers with 0-5 years of experience that are new to Pasco. Our team will be manually adding them. No need to register in myPGS!

Please email Charlotte Kralik, if you would like any additional new teachers added to your school’s list. We know that many of our new hires are not in the system yet and we want to be sure to invite all new teachers to our learning. Thank you for your support with this!

We will continue to invite any hires throughout the year. They will have access to the course and resources of any of the sessions they missed. Again, mentors can support them with this and review the content with them as well.
