2022 Sunshine State Scholars Program

The submission window for the 2022 Sunshine State Scholars Program will remain open until Wednesday, January 5, 2022. The 2022 Sunshine State Scholars event will be held March 31-April 2, 2022. Each of Florida’s school districts selects their top 11th grade students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Each of the scholars, along with their parents, convene for an extraordinary three-day program.

Pasco County is allotted 2 Scholar nominations. Schools may submit up to two names. All Pasco County Public High Schools are expected to submit students for consideration of this prestigious award using the requirements listed here and should submit nominees using the nomination form linked here.

The district is required to select and submit our 2 candidates and an alternate by January 7th. We fully recognize that the nomination window is tight and are trying to provide as much time as possible for schools to submit their nominees.  Thank you for taking the time to recognize your amazing students.

Please direct any questions you may have to Mark Butler.

Course Adoption for 22-23 School year

The course adoption process for the 22-23 year takes place through the Secondary Design Team. To request a course to be reviewed at the February 9th meeting, please complete this form by January 21, 2022. Please reference the course catalog  prior to submitting a course adoption request to ensure this course would be needed in the content area. For courses outside of these subject areas (CTE, ESE, AICE, IB, etc.) please reference the course catalog in myStudent to see what is currently adopted. The course is only adopted for use in brick and mortar schools if there is a Z suffix on the end of the course code number and it is listed as active in the system.  If you are unsure of how to access the course catalog reference these directions.  Please contact Melissa Caruso with any questions you may have.

Mid-Year Hire Mentors

As you hire new teachers for the second half of the year, please be sure to go to myPGS to pair them up with a mentor. Please use this instructional guide for assistance. Don’t forget to finalize the pairing and add the start date of the mentorship. This will ensure that the mentor will get paid for the time they have logged and mentored.

If you need to change a mentorship, please remove the original pairing. Use this quick guide on how to remove a pairing. Please note that this will not effect their pro-rated amount for the time they mentored. Then just simply add the new mentor with the instructions above.

We are asking that schools send school choice FAQ link to their support staff and other staff members as needed so that staff can answer questions families may have about school choice. Val/Sal Timeline

This is a reminder that the Val/Sal verification process will continue this school year. District office personnel will work alongside schools to determine and verify the Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Top 10 students at each high school. It is important that during the school year when administration and school counselors meet with students to discuss their GPA and class rank, that students understand the class rank is unofficial until it is announced on March 10th. Schools should follow FERPA guidelines when discussing GPA and class rank information. Please review the val/sal requirements on pages 81-82  of the SPP.  Counselors should review top students now, if they have not, to ensure they are meeting the membership requirements outlined in the SPP. If when reviewing you have a senior in the top 10 that was enrolled in Pasco eSchool for the 20-21 school year, please contact Tonia Shook to discuss.

  1. February 11th Schools have everything finalized in myStudent, i.e. NX flags entered, grades entered, no duplicate grades, etc.
  2. February 14th – 25th District personnel and school admin/counselors work to determine the preliminary top 10 seniors and the Val/Sal at each high school. Schools will be contacted immediately if any issues or concerns arise during the review.
  3. Evening of February 28th – 7th semester senior GPA is frozen.
  4. March 1st OTIS processes the 7th semester RANK using the GPA frozen the night of Feb 28th
  5. March 2nd – 4th District personnel and school admin/counselors determine the final top 10 seniors and the Val/Sal at each high school. Each school will be contacted by Monday, March 7th to verify the final result.
  6. March 8th & 9th Schools review results and prepare to announce
  7. March 10th Schools announce top students and Val/Sal.

We are aware that most schools recognize more than their top 10 students. If any issues arise as the top 10 are verified district personnel will work with the school to determine if other students are impacted by the errors before they are announced. Please contact Melissa Caruso with any questions.

IXL Support Information

Great news – after reviewing school reports with our IXL Representatives before the Thanksgiving break, schools whose students are up to date in their weekly diagnostics and completing 2 skill lessons per week with a smart score of 80%, were seeing on the average 8 months student growth. This is a great win for these students and teachers. Keep in mind this work was not replacing Grade Level Tier 1 Instruction but used as a supplement outside of classroom instruction.

If you have any questions or need help getting started, please don’t hesitate to email Jan Anderton at janderto@pasco.k12.fl.us.
